Kosnic reduces energy bills by 74% at Somerset College

Kosnic Lighting Ltd has helped Taunton-based Somerset College, a further and higher education facility with over 3,000 students, achieve remarkable energy and cost savings with the introduction of a new lighting scheme.

The college’s outdated fluorescent lighting system was resulting in huge costs: “Our lamp and electricity bills were exceeding £21,000 each year,” explains Mark Whaites, Estates Team Leader at Somerset College. “It was time to invest in new lighting to bring down future costs.”

Kosnic’s Project Team developed a new LED scheme to vastly reduce expenditure. The scheme features LUMI LED 40W Twin Bar Panels that deliver constant light across the illuminated surface, helping to maintain wellbeing and making it ideal for use in schools, offices and hospital facilities. An easy-fit replacement for standard ceiling tile fittings, the LED has an operating life of 40,000 hours and reduces energy costs by up to 50%.

Kosnic’s LUMI LED 10W (8″) Commercial Downlight was also used, which has an anti-glare design and provides similar energy savings. Both LED solutions are compatible with Kosnic’s Emergency Module that has a Li-Ion battery to supply the LED with a reduced voltage in the event of a power cut, delivering light for up to three hours.

Due to a very shallow ceiling space, Kosnic extended the connection leads on its Twin Bar Panels from 200mm to 320mm, going above and beyond with this bespoke solution that significantly improved the installation process for the college’s local electrical contractor, Arc Taunton Ltd.

With a typical 2,100 hours of usage each year, the new Kosnic Twin Bar Panel replacement has reduced Somerset College’s annual expenditure from £21,346.61 to just £4,723.06, with a 21-month payback period on initial installation. Meanwhile, the Kosnic Commercial Downlight will provide further yearly savings of £1,968.35.
